The George Padmore Institute Archives

The GPI carries forward the vision of George Padmore through its archive collections. An exploration of the archives shows how movements, campaigns and organisations adopted the same independent, radical vision and outlook demonstrated by George Padmore.

We collect and provide access to archives and rare publications relating predominantly to the black experience in Britain and internationally, especially in the Caribbean.

Black Parents Movement: march against police brutality in Harlesden, 1976.

We have a diverse range of archives comprising written and audio material, visual material and also photographs. See the Summary of Collections for more information on what archives we hold.

Much of this material has arisen from the activities of New Beacon Books, its Trustees and associated organisations and individuals, particularly during the 1960s-1990s, the history of which is described more fully in the section entitled About the Institute.

The archives cover independent cultural, educational and political activity during periods of social tension and change. Those who experienced and were engaged in such activities remain central to the work of the George Padmore Institute today.
