Foundations Vol. 3 with Shabaka Hutchings

Foundations is a new monthly reading group with a special guest bringing texts, films and music that have been foundational to their political and creative becomings. The event takes its name from the writing of John La Rose, and the New Beacon Books publication of the same name. These texts will be placed in conversation with related material from The George Padmore Institute. Each edition will feature intimate, open discussions and coincide with open days to allow greater access to selected material outside our regular opening hours.

For this edition, we're so pleased to be joined by saxophonist and writer Shabaka Hutchings.
A leading creative force in London's jazz community, Hutchings' Sons Of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and The Ancestors have all been signed to the iconic Impulse! Records label. His music - which tends to ideas around memory, history and politics among others - lends itself well to the archives. During the session, Hutchings will explore his personal connection to the poetry of fellow Barbadian Kamau Brathwaite. Brathwaite was a co-founder of the Carribean Artists Movement, a literary and cultural movement and forum celebrating Caribbean and black diasporic culture at a crucial moment in politics in the 1960's. Expect readings, rich discussion and music!

We are partnering with KIN for the Foundations series. KIN is a community group whose aim is to bring together black activists and organisers from across the UK to work cooperatively, strategically and supportively with each other.

To raise funds for the GPI we are charging £5 on the door. If you would like to come but can't afford this, please email us on info@georgepadmoreinstitute.org. If you can't make the event but would like to explore for yourself the archives the GPI holds, please don't hesitate to get in touch and visit during our opening hours.
