GPI archives now fully accessible

We are pleased to announce that we have secured reading space at the Islington Local History Centre for anyone unable to physically access the GPI.

We can transfer records to the Centre which is situated in the Finsbury Library, 245 St John Street, EC1V 4NB. The Centre is fully wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet. Young People and new ethnicities

Roxy Harris will talk on ‘Black & Brown British youth: from ethnic outsiders to insiders’. He will be joined by Cise Barissever, a doctoral student at Kings College London, and Aisha Phoenix, a doctoral student at Goldsmiths, University of London. They will both discuss their research on young people and ethnicities.

GPI Generation Celebrates Roxy Harris’ New Ethnicities and Language Use - a study of self-representations of the patterns of language use of a group of adolescents of mainly South Asian descent in West London. The study contributes to an analysis of the nature of ethnicity amongst Britain’s visible minorities.

The George Padmore Institute  (GPI) condemns in the strongest possible terms the actions taken by the police against peaceful protestors on Friday 18th December, 2009, outside the Trinidad & Tobago Parliament during the Property Tax Debate. The GPI further condemns the arrest of David Abdulah, General Secretary of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and the attempts by the police to intimidate law abiding citizens staging a legal and peaceful protest.

Friends Please see attached information on the arrest of David Abdullah - General Secretary of the OWTU and leader of FITUN - and other protesters on the Peoples Democracy demonstration against the introduction of Property Tax in Trinidad and Tobago. We have worked with David over many years on many international campaigns. The George Padmore Institute has invited David to give the inaugural "John La Rose Annual Memorial Lecture series" on 20th March at Logan hall University of London.
