Tribute to Jayne Cortez

The activist poet Jayne Cortez passed away on Friday 28th December 2012. Her passing constitutes a great and aching loss for family and friends around the world as exemplified in the words of the GPI's Chair Michael La Rose:

I was devastated by the news of the passing of Jayne Cortez. Our love and support go out from all involved with the International Bookfairs and the George Padmore Institute in Britain  to Mel and the rest of her family.

Jayne was part of our movement . Steadfast , fearless and committed. Her contribution was exceptional.  Her work lives on in her poetry, music and example .

We were honoured to have Jayne give the 2nd John La Rose Memorial Lecture in Leeds. Her unflinching analysis, compassion and grace  shine out in the DVD recording of the speech and  contributions during the event .

Jayne we will miss you badly. You gave everything.  Thank you

Michael La Rose

'Jayne has been cremated in New York in a small family ceremony. Some of her ashes will be taken to Senegal where she and Mel had a house and lived for part of each year. There will be a public tribute to Jayne in New York and we will also be helping to arrange one in London. We will post details of both tributes and any others when we have the dates.' Sarah White.

Margaret Busby contributed an article on Jayne in the Guardian newspaper and the New York Times also ran an obituary.
