This April marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Black Parents Movement (BPM), an organisation formed in 1975 following the arrest of an innocent West Indian student named Cliff McDaniel in Haringey on false accusations of ‘breaching the peace’ and ‘assaulting a police officer’. Fortunately, McDaniel was well known to his local community as a student of the George Padmore Supplementary School (GSSM) on Albert Road, Haringey. Many of the parents and teachers associated with the school came together to form the Black Parents Movement (BPM) in defence of McDaniel, with many young black people forming their own organisation the Black Students Movement (BSM) in solidarity.
To mark this anniversary, the George Padmore Institute (GPI) has developed a resource detailing the foundation of the BPM, its governance, key national and international campaigns and the organisation’s legacy.
The 18-slide presentation also highlights key GPI publications that mention the history of the BPM which are all available to buy at our online shop: https://www.georgepadmoreinstitute.org/shop
